Medical Comorbidities
A core part of the clinical focus of this practice involves addressing the often-overlooked connections between mental health and medical comorbidities — the gut-brain connection in gastrointestinal disorders, and the effects of inflammatory, autonomic, autoimmune, endocrine, and metabolic conditions such as IBS/IBD (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's), Sjögren's syndrome, POTS, MCAS, allergic rhinitis, chronic pain and fatigue, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and hormonal or nutritional deficiencies.
These conditions often involve underlying systemic processes that shape both the course of psychiatric illness and the efficacy and tolerability of psychiatric medications — factors weighed carefully in formulating treatment plans for individual patients.
Psychiatric / Medical Comorbidities:
Gut–brain connection
Addressing the bidirectional relationship between gastrointestinal conditions such as IBS, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis and mood, anxiety, cognition, and stress regulation
Inflammatory and autoimmune conditions
Considering the psychiatric and cognitive effects of systemic inflammation, including conditions such as seasonal allergies, POTS, MCAS, chronic pain, and chronic fatigue
Thyroid disorders
Evaluating the impact of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease on mood, energy, cognition, and sleep
Diabetes mellitus
Monitoring stress associated with managing Diabetes type 1 and type 2
Monitoring effect of uncontrolled blood sugar (hyperglycemia / hypoglycemia) on mood, sleep, cognition
Monitoring effect of psychiatric medications on blood sugar via interaction with diabetic medications and effect on hormone levels
Nutrient deficiencies
Assessing how low vitamin D, vitamin B12, magnesium, and other nutrients may contribute to fatigue, mood changes, cognitive symptoms, or sleep disturbances
Hormonal deficiencies and imbalances
Considering the effects of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone changes on mood, cognition, energy, sleep, and emotional well-being
